Preparing for Earthquakes and Hurricanes Workshop
The Charleston region is extremely susceptible to damage from both hurricanes and earthquakes. One in four businesses will experience a crisis each year. How can you make sure your business will survive? Creating and implementing a business continuity plan will help strengthen your business operations and reduce the risk to your company. On Thursday, July 31, the Chamber’s Business Continuity Planning Council will host a workshop to assist companies on creating and implementing a business continuity plan from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Chamber Boardroom. Attendees will be provided a sample business continuity plan that they can take back to their company and use as a guide to begin creating their own plan. By creating a plan, you can ensure the safety of your employees; know what will happen to your equipment and important files, and also what the next steps you should take after the disaster to get your business back up and running. The workshop will also include a panel discussion of case studies of local businesses that have implemented business plans. Attendees will hear about their experiences and lessons learned in creating a business continuity plan. This workshop is a great opportunity for businesses to learn how they can minimize the negative effects a disaster can have on their company by creating a business continuity plan. Anyone that is interested in sustaining their business should attend.

Important Private Sector Survey of Preparedness and Continuity Practices
The Riley Institute at the College of Charleston is conducting a Private Sector Survey of Preparedness and Continuity Practices to understand business continuity planning in the region. The survey will provide valuable information in gauging how prepared businesses are to be able to deal with a disaster, including the extent of the plans in place to effectively continue operations. The survey is designed for both private (privately or publicly held) companies as well as nonprofits.
The survey will benefit our Community and Regional Resilience Initiative and will provide the region with additional important data.
To access the survey, click here.
The first page of the survey gives an explanation for its purpose and provides information about confidentiality.
The data collected for the survey will be made available to the business community, and will be compared with other selected regions. Look for the results to the survey this fall.
